Chinese manuscripts at Houghton Library, 1562-1915 (inclusive).

Holdings of Chinese manuscripts include one volume of the Yung-lo ta-tien, encyclopedia of the Yung-lo Emperor of the Ming Dynasty (copy made in 1562-1567), which deals with children's diseases; conversation and phrase books in Chinese and English; translation, 1890, of the first four books of the Confucian Analects by A. K. Glover; and letterbook of Robert Coltman, Jr., with copies of cables he sent to American newspapers concerning the Boxer Rebellion. Also includes autobiography, autographs, and other papers of Li Ta-chao, one of the founders of the Chinese Communist Party; letters with transcripts, 1884-1913, and miscellaneous documents of H. F. Merrill, an official with the Chinese customs service; and paintings on rice paper, 1893, of animals and flowers. Other Chinese manuscripts entered separately are Hosea Ballou Morse letterbooks and Sir Robert Hart's papers (see entries under their names).
